Businesses Can Use Facebook Pay for Checkout on Their Websites

Facebook recently announced that businesses will now be able to use Facebook Pay as a checkout experience on their websites. This will provide customers with a quick and easy payment method, which many may already be familiar with.

Facebook first launched Facebook pay in the U.S. in 2019 as a way for people to purchase items from businesses directly on Facebook. This is one of the major components in people being able to use the social media platform as a shopping tool. Beyond pushing a button to buy something, they can actually pay using Facebook Pay

With the addition of Facebook Pay availability for websites, the experience should prove to be all the more universal. Businesses now can offer a new option for payment convenience, as Facebook users will not have to worry about re-entering card information during the checkout process, similar to PayPal and the like.

The company says Facebook Pay is designed to help businesses drive conversion higher as a result of reduced friction and a mobile friendly interface. Users can load their credit or debit card information into Facebook Pay, and click to pay wherever Facebook Pay appears. Facebook says additional payment methods will be added over time.

Some consumers and businesses may have concerns about security and privacy given the headlines often associated with the social media giant. However, the company insists that data is protected.

"Payment details are encrypted and securely stored, eliminating the need for businesses to manage customers’ card or bank account numbers," Facebook said in its announcement. "As always, the card and bank account numbers that people provide will not be used to personalize their experience or inform the ads they see. And people’s activity, like their payments or purchases, will not be shared with their friends or to their profile or feed, unless they choose to share it themselves."

Facebook does collect the transaction date, billing, shipping, and contact details necessary to process payments, protect against loss, and for legal compliance. The businesses receive only the information needed to support the actual transaction, such as the customer contact and shipping and order information. Users’ payment credentials are not shared with any businesses.

For now, only businesses using participating e-commerce platforms will be able to take advantage. Facebook will first offer the feature to Shopify merchants, but will expand to other providers in the future. Businesses who wish to utilize the feature can go to the Facebook Pay website and sign up for updates on availability. There is no charge to businesses or customers who use it.

Currently, businesses can use Facebook Pay on Facebook Shops and Facebook Marketplace.
