Yelp Makes It Easier to Find and Support Women-Owned Businesses

Small Business

Last year, Yelp partnered with Rebecca Minkoff and Female Founder Collective to launch the "Women-Owned Business" attribute in an effort to help consumers use Yelp specifically to identify and support women-owned businesses in their communities. According to the company, over 72,000 businesses around the country have added this attribute to their Yelp pages, making it easier for users to find them.

Now, it’s even easier for users to find these businesses, as Yelp has made the attribute searchable via its website and app. Users won’t have to just happen upon a woman-owned business. Instead, they can actively seek one out when looking for a business that fits their needs.

"We’ve seen a rising trend among reviewers mentioning if a company is female-owned," says Emily Washcovick, Manager of Local Business Outreach at Yelp, in a post on the company blog. "It’s up 20 percent since a year ago and 54 percent since five years ago. We understand that consumers want to champion women entrepreneurs and know that their hard earned money is going into businesses they care about. In fact, we see that in looking at the average rating of all open U.S. businesses with at least 5 reviews, businesses marked as women-owned had higher average ratings than businesses marked as not women-owned. The effect holds true across just about every category of business on Yelp." (1)

In the post, Yelp highlights 100 specific female entrepreneurs, whose stories the company said it will be sharing on its social media channels. The list includes restaurants, clothing stores, yoga and dance studios, and a variety of other small business types.

Yelp has also launched a new women-owned business sticker/decal, which women-owned businesses can display in their windows. There is an application form where a free sticker can be requested. It says shipping will take two to three weeks. (2)

Female business owners who wish to activate the women-owned business attribute on their Yelp page can do so by going to their Yelp business owner dashboard.
