Sovos and Shopify Partner to Automate Sales Tax Filing for Merchants

Software company Sovos recently announced a partnership with Shopify in which the two will work together to automate sales tax filing for Shopify merchants and simplify the sales tax return process. The offering comes via the Shopify Tax feature, which automates the preparation, filing and remittance of sales tax returns for merchants. The feature is available to eligible merchants in the United States.

The Sovos Sales and Use Tax (SUT) filing solution is integrated with Shopify Tax, which aims to offer merchants a more streamlined experience when it comes to managing sales tax compliance. According to Sovos, with automated filing merchants can significantly reduce the hours they spend preparing and filing returns each month, while helping to minimize their risk of audit.

“Sales tax rules and laws are constantly evolving and left unchecked, can create serious and expensive problems for businesses down the road,” commented Sovos CEO Kevin Akeroyd. “Shopify, through its partnership with Sovos, will greatly reduce the burden on sellers and allow them to focus on delivering for their customers.”

The partnership with Sovos is just one of several recent collaborations Shopify has made with other companies. For example, it recently announced a partnership with TMG to launch TMG Fuse, a Shopify app to enable bidirectional management of SAP ERPs directly from the Shopify admin panel. It partnered with Zaelab to provide enterprise-grade B2B commerce capabilities to smaller merchants, and with Accenture to provide commerce as a service to help CPG businesses grow direct consumer revenue. Before these, Shopify announced partnerships with AAXIS on an app for manufacturers and distributors, with Teifi on a parts and product discovery solution, and with Uncap to help manufacturers and distributors digital storefronts.

At a developer conference in June, Shopify touted its efforts to improve its offerings through more partnerships.

"Partners are our force multiplier, helping us reach more merchants, deliver faster value, and provide differentiated solutions tailored to real business needs," Shopify’s Rukmani Subramanian said in a blog post recapping the event. "When partners lead, merchants thrive. And when merchants thrive, everyone grows. This creates a virtuous cycle. The more we collaborate, the more value we deliver to merchants, and the more opportunity we unlock for everyone.

Market research firm EMarketer says Shopify’s recent moves help merchants reclaim time and reduce risk and that this helps position Shopify as a stronger commerce platform and partner. "SMBs operating on the platform benefit from removing the burden of tracking sales taxes for different states and can focus their efforts on expanding their geographic reach," it says.1 "Satisfaction with Shopify’s ecommerce solutions could also encourage cross-sell opportunities for things like Shopify’s POS system."

The firm also pointed to Shopify partnerships with Coinbase and Stripe to expand stablecoin retail payments and with Target, which integrated with Shopify last year, enabling merchants to apply to appear on the Target Plus online marketplace.

There are reportedly over 2.6 million live stores running on the Shopify platform.2 The more partnerships, such as the one with Sovos and others mentioned, that the company continues to form, the more attractive the platform will be to any business looking to enhance its ecommerce efforts.
